LTP recognises the value of active participation of volunteers within the local and wider community, and encourages its employees to volunteer including through paid volunteering leave.
LTP Technical Director, Nigel Wilson, is a member of local running club, Beverley Athletics Club, and explains how he has swapped his shorts and running shoes for hi-vis and work boots to support the club with the planning and deployment of temporary traffic management measures as part of their two key annual races, Beverley 10K and Walkington 10K.
“The two races have been going for many years and so the club already have established traffic management plans that are very much fit for purpose. My involvement has been to review the plans in light of changing requirements from the highway authority, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, lessons learned from previous years and other feedback to make refinements to reflect current needs. I’ve worked as a professional traffic and highway engineer for some 37 years including work on major events such as London 2012 so I hope my experience has been of use. I’ve been involved in updating the Traffic Management Plans and Risk Assessments for the events, making the formal application for road closures on behalf of the club and also helped manage the logistics of deploying and recovering the traffic measures on the event days. I don’t often get involved with temporary traffic measures so it’s given me an opportunity to update some skills in that area. The club has a large stock of signs and cones plus a number of its members have accredited training as traffic marshals which allows the club to do their own traffic management. It’s a really professional set-up and I think people would be really surprised to see how much work goes into the planning and delivery of these kinds of events.”
Beverley Athletic Club are a friendly running club interested primarily in road and cross country running. They welcome runners of all abilities, shapes, sizes and ages!
